Penn Medicine – Valley Forge Facility

Natural Landscape Renovation and Maintenance

Challenge

The facilities manager at Penn Medicine contacted LandStudies to assist with renovating the existing landscaping around this LEED certified green building. The original landscape plan was installed in accordance with land development approval, but was not maintained properly. Wildflower meadows on steep slopes around the building had not been properly maintained and invasive species dominated. Improperly planted trees were dying, non-native species were used to replace native species and the green roof was sparse and needed more seasonal interest.

Solution

LandStudies prepared a Green Master Plan, which identified problem areas along with renovation and maintenance strategies to improve the overall appearance of the landscaping in keeping with the “green” building image. Edge treatments were clearly defined along with identification of important views to the site. The resulting plan included a phased implementation based on budget. LandStudies has been contracted to provide the installation of the renovation strategies and annual maintenance.
